Tips to Reduce Your Water Waste
It’s a lot easier than you think to waste water in your day-to-day life and this can have a really negative effect on your bank balance, as well as on the environment! To help you out, we’ve put together some tips on simple ways to save water and hopefully you can reduce that water bill as well as doing your bit for the planet.
Check for and fix any leaky Taps/Toilets/Showers.
Leaks can waste a large amount of water if you keep leaving them unfixed! The best thing to do is call out a plumber straight away as this could save you a lot of money in the long run. It could be a faulty washer on a tap. Maybe a faulty on/off cartridge on a shower valve, or even a faulty fill valve on a toilet. These can all cause water to continue to drip. RyGas have emergency plumbers ready to help.
Turn off the tap when brushing your teeth.
This might be one of the simplest ways to save water, as long as you make it into a habit! There’s no need to keep the tap running the whole time you brush your teeth, so it’s time to start turning it off!
Reduce the time spent in the shower.
We all know that it’s nice to indulge in a long, hot, luxurious shower, but if you do this every day then maybe it’s time to cut back! A 5-10 minute shower should be enough for most of us. However, a shower is better than taking a bath.
Ensure your central heating system is working correctly.
A malfunctioning or inefficient heating system is another way that water can be easily wasted. You should get your boiler serviced at least once a year to make sure it’s in good condition. If you experience pressure loss, you may have a leak under the floor which can cause waste water, and higher than usual water bills!
Only do a clothes wash when you have a full load.
This may seem like an obvious thing to say in terms of simple ways to save water but many people do a lot of washing over the course of a week! Washing machines use a large amount of water so if you live in a shared house, it’s a good idea to ask around to see if anyone has some laundry to top up your wash.
Washing up by hand?
Fill the sink or washing up bowl with water first, instead of letting the water run while you scrub! While it may seem like more effort, letting the tap run wastes a lot of water compared to using a washing up bowl.
Don’t overfill the kettle
Make sure to fill up only what you need. We all need our tea and coffee but boiling water can be very wasteful in terms of both water and energy. Only fill it up a little bit if you’re making a hot drink. And, if you live with other people, ask if anyone else needs water so that you only end up boiling the kettle once.
Install a dual flush
You can use the old rule “if it’s yellow let it mellow…”. Flushing the toilet also uses a lot of water and making a simple change to a dual flush might help you to save! You can always call one of our plumbers in Wimbledon to help you install it.
We hope this list of simple ways to save water can help you make some small changes in your life and save you some money in the long run! It’s also important for us all to do our bit for the environment. If you’re worried about an inefficient boiler or any leaks in your property, give us a call on 0208 6407907 or contact us here.
