FUTURE WORK & HISTORY
Frequently Asked Questions
There are many reasons you may need an emergency plumber but in our experience here are the top 4 reasons and what you can do to try and avoid it?
- Burst pipe on either your cold incoming mains or your central heating pipework.
- Taps that won't turn off
- Cylinder leaking
- Toilet connection leaking
Burst Pipes
Burst pipes can be very common especially in the winter on cold mains. As the water can freeze and this then expands causing pressure on joint. Try to make sure that any exposed external pipes are lagged, keep your central heating on and use your water outlets more often to keep the flow. Get a good understanding of where or how your pipes may run, so that if you do have a leak you can understand what pipe may be leaking. If it's a central heating pipe and you have a combination boiler, once the system runs out of water your leak will stop unless you top up the system, this means your emergency may wait until the next day when a plumbers rates are cheaper. If you think it's a cold mains, ensure you know where your stop cock is located. Or in severe emergencies, did you know The Fire Service can attend to stop a leak if it's causing danger to your wellbeing.
Taps that wont turn off
Its not the most severe emergency, but you certainly don't feel comfortable leaving the house if your tap won't shut off. As at very high speed if your drains do not take this volume of water away quick enough it can cause a flood. Not to mention, a very high water bill. You can always turn off your stop cock, but this is inconvenient as it will stop all your water. So check to see if you have any local isolation valves - if you haven't you may want to get a plumber to install one when coming to isolate the water for any future emergencies.
Cylinders Leaking
Cylinders leaking can be highly dangerous, this is as they hold such a high volume of potentially very hot water. Its really important if you see a leak on a cylinder body that you get this isolated as quickly as possible to avoid your cylinder splitting and causing damage. You can try to prevent these scenarios by getting an annual cylinder service. Many people forget about there tanks and cylinders and just get a Boiler service but they are just as important to check and maintain.
Toilet Connection Leaking
Toilets can be a common cause of leaks. If you think the toilet is leaking from the waste connection, don't use or flush the toilet to avoid the leak. If its coming from the cold mains connection, check to see if your toilet has a local isolation point or if not use your mains stopcock. To try and prevent toilet leaks, ensure your toilet pan is correctly secured to your floor to avoid movement. Also if your toilet waste connection is concealed, think about putting in an inspection hatch.

Do
- Make sure the property is safe before you enter
- Try to avoid direct contact with any water which remains. It may be contaminated
- Have a torch at hand when entering the property
- Switch off the electricity supply at the fuse box, if it is safe to do so. If there is evidence of water inside the fuse box or if there are signs of arcing or overheating, seek professional advice
- Unplug damaged electrical appliances and move all portable ones away from the area affected by flooding
- Arrange for other services, such as gas, to be switched off. Electricity and gas supplies should not be turned back on until you have had professional advice that it is safe to do so
Don’t
- Use candles to guide you when entering the property
- Use any mains powered electrical appliances in areas affected by flooding until advised by a registered electrician that it is safe to do so
- Go near any exposed wiring. It may still be live
- Start to clean up or carry out repairs until you are sure it is safe to do so
If your electrics are tripping, once you have insured they have been made safe or been provided with professional advice from a Local Electrician. It may be advised that you let the affected area dry out before a Local Electrician attends or re-attends, to check for any faults. As whilst water is present if you have an RCD protected fuse board your electrics will continue to trip on that affected circuit.
