Frequently Asked Questions
What does a mains booster pump do?
A mains booster pump is sometimes a cheaper and easier alternative to upgrading your mains water supply pipe and therefore pressure. In connects on to the incoming mains and will boost the pressure thereafter. Each pump will have some minimum requirements, so you may need a survey visit with a plumber first to determine if your property is suitable.
Can I have a mains water booster pump installed?
If the flow rate is between 1.5 and 12l/min then some main booster pumps will work, as long as there are no collapsed mains pipes or restrictions.
I have a combination boiler can i still fit a mains booster?
The pressure on a combi boiler gauge is for the sealed heating system the booster pump will be fine to fill the heating system up to the required pressure. The mains going through the boiler will determine the hot water flow and pressure through an outlet. The pump can be installed just after the stop tap or on the inlet to the combi.
Before getting a mains booster pump or carrying out any other works you should always ask yourself a few simple questions.
- Has my property always had poor pressure? If so it's more likely a mains booster pump could be for you. If it hasn't always been bad, when did it get bad? As maybe there is a restriction in the water supply pipes, you can get your water provider to come out and assess this for you.
- Do you have a mains fed system or is it tank fed? If you have tanks and they have not been converted to mains pressure and your main concern is your hot water pressure it may not be a mains booster pump your looking for.
Its always advised you get an engineer from Ry to attend and carry out some checks and a survey first.
Other options that may work better for you are
- Updating your mains water supply pipe into the property.
- Converting your system if tank fed to mains pressure - if its hot tap issues.

As maybe there is a restriction in the water supply pipes hosted by your supplier, you can get your water provider to come out and assess this for you. Or you may have a restriction in an internal pipe somewhere.

Its always advised you get an engineer from Ry to attend and carry out some checks and a survey first.
Other options that may work better for you are
- Updating your mains water supply pipe into the property.
- Converting your system if tank fed to mains pressure - if its hot tap issues.
- Diagnostic time to assess if there could be a faulty component on your boiler, or cylinder or pipe restrictions.
