Frequently Asked Questions
The ease of replacing a stopcock can depend on a couple of factors
- Do you live in a house or do you live in a block of flats?
- Do you have a mains stopcock in the Road or before yours thats operational - so they can turn your water off to change your one?
- Does your stop cock connect on to any lead pipes or fittings?
- Is your stopcock accessible?
All the above factors will effect the time, ease and cost of replacing a stop cock. So this information is important to advise a plumber when booking.
If you live in a flat:
If you live in a flat - turning off a stopcock out in the road or before yours will turn off the water supply to the whole block. This means you will likely need to request permission with the freeholder or block management. Its often easier if possible to freeze your pipe with a freeze machine, as this will then not effect other flats. However if you have an old lead pipe connection its not advisable to freeze them as they can burst. So this will only be an option if it's in copper.
You live in a house do you have a stopcock in the Road?
Most domestic houses will have a water stop cock out in the road connecting on to your mains incoming water supply. This is normally a black circle or square grill, this can be used if there was an emergency leak and no one was home. If this is working - you should be able to turn it off and simply replace your stop cock. Sometimes they are not accessible and or no longer work, in which case you can call your water supplier to come out and fix it.
Does your stopcock connect on to a lead pipe?
If your mains water supply is lead and or your stop cock. You will not have the option to freeze the pipe, and therefore you will need to find another point of isolation. As above depending if you live in a flat or a house. The materials costs will also be more if you have a lead supply.
Is your stop cock accessible?
If your stopcock is not accessible, you have two options. 1. make access 2. Try to see if you can cut a new stopcock in before this one.
A stopcock is your mains water master isolation point. Meaning if you turn this off it should turn all water off to the whole property.
Where as an isolation valve is like a little brother of a stopcock. You may have a few of these around the house, so that you can shut off small parts of the water supply. For example you may have isolation valves on your hot and cold feeds to your tap. So if your tap wont shut off, you can isolate this and still have water to your shower and toilet.
If you have a friend or relative who is disabled or elderly and may not have the accessibility to turn off their stop cock in an emergency situation there are a few options.
- Smart remote water control
Grohe have introduced a smart controlled stop cock that can be controlled via an app. This is quite pricy and around £399 for just the part plus estimated 1-1.5 hours to install. However the cost is invaluable should you have an emergency situation.
2. Sure-stop easy access switch
The Sure-stop is a reasonably priced stop cock at around £65 which provides a separate switch - this can be positioned conveniently and it just takes a press of the switch to turn off your water. Its also really easy to install and so shouldn't be more than one hours labour.
