Frequently Asked Questions
Toilets often can cause issues, as they are being used so frequently. See below for the most common causes and faults
Exposed Toilets (Toilets where you can lift the lid off the top of the cistern and most standard)
- Fill Valves - all toilets will have a fill valve that tells a toilet when to allow water into the pan. You may have the older ball float type, or may have the newer valve type fill valve. This can cause running water into the pan constantly. The average labour cost to fix this is 1 hour so between £75-95+VAT the average part cost is £12-32+VAT
- Siphon - The siphon is what controls the flush and the pressure. Often if your toilet isn't flushing at full power or at all its the siphons fault. This part normally means taking off the cistern to replace it. The time to do so depends on the age of the toilet and in what condition the cistern, donut washer and washers are in. On average the repair cost is £85-160+VAT and the average part cost is £28-48+VAT
Exposed Toilets (Toilets which are boxed in and often you only see the flush push button on the wall)
- Air Bellows Failing - Often concealed toilets have push buttons, meaning the flush doesn't work correctly. Parts costs are dependent on the make of your toilet parts as concealed toilets are often specific to that inbuilt cistern. One average repair cost £75-95+VAT and the part is around £22-48+VAT
- As above on the exposed toilets these are also common parts to fail on concealed toilets being the Fill Valve & Siphon however they can be harder to source and you may need a plumber to attend and try to repair your parts and if not take some details of what parts to return with as they are often not in stock items for many concealed toilets. Costs depend on the access of the concealed toilet, as some installations are not done with future repairs in mind and it can mean removing tiles. However send us some pictures or give us a call and we will be able to guide you in the right direction.
- Leaking pan connectors - Some concealed toilets will have wall hung toilet pans. These are very prone to movement over time. Either due to the weight and constant use, or the original fixing to the surface. This often causes the toilet to slowly pull away from the pan connector. This can cause leaks behind your concealed toilet and will need access made to be repaired. Always ensure you toilet is fully secured to avoid any potential future leaks. On average concealed toilets with leaking waste connections cost £280-460+VAT to repair depending on access
Ry always try to gather as much information as we can over the phone so we can visit as prepared as possible.
By reading the above FAQ question of whats the most common problem, you will see that there can be so many varying factors so we can never guarantee to have parts onboard that will match or that we can fix your toilet in the first visit.
By giving us a call one of our team will ask some questions to decide
- What the problem is
- What type of toilet you have
- What the access is like
- What may be causing the issue - for the engineer to then read over on the notes before visiting
They will often request photos so we can see if there is anything we can have on board. But we can't buy lots of parts that are specific to one persons toilet or tap, because if thats not the problem we can't return them and may not use them ever again. However many toilets have universal parts that we carry on board, its just in some occasions the parts are very specific or special order.
In which case if it's a part the engineer thinks he can get on the day, the merchants near by and he has time to fit it. He will advise you the option if he thinks its cost effective for you to go and get the part.
However as you can imagine some properties do not have a merchant near by that would have the part in stock and with traffic etc its often not cost effective. Its often better for us to tell you whats wrong, whats needed and for us to send a quotation. You can then clearly see the transparent costs. We will then return with the parts in hand once accepted, meaning you are not paying for wasted time.
Some toilet parts are also special order and so there is no option to attend diagnose and then source the parts to return. Its always good advise to take photos of booklets you get when you fit household items as you can then source spares very easily, or advise your plumber of the make/model before attending
Like most things in the trade industry the closer it is in design to your existing... the cheaper and less disruptive its likely to be.
For example
- If you have a standard close coupled toilet currently - you would want to go with one with a similar base as you have to consider any existing connection to your soil stack, any boxing around pipework and flooring may be effected if you change the size of the pan.
- If you have a traditional toilet and wanted to change it to a modern close coupled - you will need to make repairs to the wall behind the previous size cistern. The pan size and positioning will also be different and so how this effects your connection to your soil stack also needs to be taken into consideration.
