What Is A Powerflush? And Why May I Need One?

Why should i get RyGas to carry out my power flush?

RyGas engineers that carry out system flushing have had years of experience of various heating systems and severity of blockages. Anyone can connect a machine to do all the work but RyGas engineers understand the importance of protecting the working area to keep it clean, the best place on the heating system to connect the machine, carrying out dumps during the process to get rid of muck along the way, the correct inhibitor and cleanser to use and carrying out a hot & cold flush to maximise efficiency. RyGas also use the best Powerflushing machine on the market the Fernox Powerflow. RyGas provide competitive prices to carry out a Powerflush.

Why would I need a power flush?

You may need a Powerflush if your central heating system is blocked up with sludge & debris which naturally builds up overtime. This sludge and debris circulates through your central heating system when it’s in use and can cause radiators to get blocked and not work and boiler components to become blocked causing issues as well as knock on effects to other parts that were not affected before. You can tell you need a power flushing by checking the system water from your radiators and you may be experiencing problems such as those listed below.

  • Cold spots on radiators or some radiators not working at all
  • Intermittent hot water from the heat exchanger in the boiler becoming blocked.
  • Various other issues from boiler components becoming dirty or worn from the inefficiency of the heating system.

It is also highly recommended to get a Powerflush alongside a new boiler installation unless your system water is already very clear. This is because boiler manufacturers will not cover your guarantee if they come out and see that your system has not been flushed, as all of that dirty water has or could have affected their product which is not their fault and normally part of their T&C’s. Also the boiler will not stand such a good change of longevity, you wouldn’t buy a new car and fill it with the wrong fuel so you should not do it to your boiler.

What are the benefits of a power flush?

The overall aim of a power flush is to restore the full circulation of water around the central heating system and remove all dirt & debris from the water. It can eliminate noise from the boiler and the pump as well as the system is not having to work so hard pumping it round. It also ensures that your radiators can give off heat evenly and efficiently. The entire system has to be flushed in order to get the best results and to increase the chances of the longevity of your boiler.

Can I not just have a magnetic system filter fitted…?

No, unless your central heating system water is already clear having a magnetic system filter fitted will not make a difference as the dirt is already present. A Powerflush is the cure and the magnetic system filter is a preventative. It is recommended to have a magnetic system filter alongside a power flush to help prevent the future build up of dirt and debris over time. These can be cleaned annually alongside your annual boiler service.

How is a power flush carried out at RyGas?

A heating engineer will connect a powerful high flow/low pressure pumping unit to the central heating system  and with the help of high strength cleansing chemicals will carry out flushing, including the dumping of dirty water. The chemicals used during a Powerflush include a sludge crust breaker and remover to help get rid of rust and sludge, a descaler to break down limescale and a corrosion inhibitor to stop further rusting from occurring. The crust breaker and remover are acid-based so that they help to combat any rust present and any other debris, such as sand particles, that might have settled in the radiators, pipes and boiler. At the end of the process there is no acid left in the central heating system’s water.
